 African American Scholarships

Ron Brown Scholarships Go to: www.RonBrown.org   The award: $10,000 for 10 to 20 students. It's renewable.  Academic merit, leadership, community service, all fields.  The deadline is usually in January.  This is one of most prestigious scholarships, and it's very, very competitive.  Details at site.  

 

 

Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship   Go to: www.JackieRobinson.org   JRF annually awards selected applicants four-year scholarships of up to $7,200 per year to attend a four-year accredited college or university of their choice. Project Excellence Scholarships  Go to: www.project-excellence.com   The award: $4,000 or higher (to full tuition). Number of winners: at least 600.  Academic merit, leadership, community service, all fields. Deadline: Feb. 1.  Details at site.  

 

United College Fund Scholarships Go to: scholarships.uncf.org   The UNCF is one of our major scholarship gateways.  The awards are of varying amounts, and there are a great many under different names and requirements (Grandmet, Duracell, for example). The deadline is usually December. Details at site.  

 

Kodak Scholarships   Go to: motion.kodak.com/motion/Education/Scholarships/index.htm   The award: varying amounts to $5,000. Number of awards: Varies.  For those studying in film/cinematography at U.S. colleges. Details at site.  

 

Intel Science Talent Search   Go to: www.sciserv.org/sts   The award is from $5,000 to $100,000. There are approx. 40 awards in this prestigious competition.  You must present a scientific research project.  Deadline: December.  Details at site.  (In one news story, we read an inspiring story about an AA student who was a semi-finalist for her cancer- related research. Students who do well here usually have strong school support and one-on-one mentoring.)  
NACME Scholarships(National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering)   Go to: www.nacme.org/scholarships/   The awards go up to $20,000, and many are awarded.  This is our major engineering scholarship gateway.  You must be an engineering student. The deadline is usually in February.  Go to the Website for details, or contact aid officials at your college. Gates Millennium Scholarships   Go to: www.gmsp.org/SOW4/   The goal of Gates Millennium Scholarships is to promote academic excellence and to provide an opportunity for thousands of outstanding students with significant financial need. The scholarship covers room, board, and tuition for at least 1,000 high school students a year.  Nomination material for 2002-2003 will be available November, 2001. NSBE Scholarships(National Society of Black Engineers)   Got to: www.nsbe.org/scholarships   Award amount: generally  from $1,500 to $3,000 for members of NSBE.  Number of awards varies. This is primarily for engineering students and others majoring in related disciplines. Deadlines vary. Details at Website.  

 

American Institute of Certified Public  Accountants Scholarships (AICPA)   Go to: www.aicpa.org/Career/DiversityInitiatives/Pages/smas.aspx   For undergraduates studying accounting at a U.S. college with at least 30 credits completed. Awards up to $5,000 with about 300 winners annually. Deadline is in July.Go to Website for GPA requirements and details.

 

Bonner Scholar Scholarships   Go to: www.bonner.org/   Award amount: $4,000 and renewable till graduation.  Community service is pivotal, as well as need.  Your college must be a participating college. Approx. 1,500 awards granted.  Deadline varies.  Go to Website for details. 

 

Developmental Fund for Black Students in Science and Technology Scholarships   Go to: www.dfbsstscholarship.org/dfb_sch.html   Award amount: $2,000 and renewable. Several scholarships granted. This is for science or engineering students at HBCUs. Deadline is June 15. Go to Website for details. 

 

 

Hispanic Scholarships

Created in 1975, the LULAC National Scholarship Fund (LNSF) was one of the first national programs designed to outreach the Hispanic community by providing financial assistance to economically disadvantaged, but academically gifted Hispanic students in the United States. Since its inception, the LNSF has awarded 13 million dollars to nearly 25,000 students.

 

Actuarial Scholarships for Minority Students — $500 to $3000 awarded each year to up to 20-40 Hispanic and other minority undergraduate and graduate students majoring in actuarial science or math.

 

Earl G. Graves NAACP Scholarship — $5000 awarded each year to varied number of Hispanic and other minority undergraduate and graduate students majoring in business.

 

First In My Family Scholarship Program — $500 to $5000 awarded each year to 100-200 Hispanic undergraduate students.

 

High School Scholarship Program — $1000 to $2500 awarded each year to varied number of freshmen undergraduate students.

 

Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities Scholarship Programs — $500 to $3000 awarded each year to up to 200 Hispanic undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in HACU college.

 

Hispanic College Fund Scholarship Program — $1000 to $5000 awarded each year to 600-750 Hispanic undergraduate students.

 

Hispanic Scholarship Fund — $1000 to $3000 awarded each year to 2900-3500 Hispanic undergraduate and graduate students.

 

HSF/General Motors Scholarship — Up to $2500 awarded each year to 83 Hispanic undergraduate students majoring in Engineering.

 

Lockheed Martin Scholarship Program — $500 to $5000 awarded each year varied number of Hispanic undergraduate students majoring in engineering and related fields.

 

New Horizons Scholars Program — $2500 awarded each year to up to 50 Hispanic (or African American) freshmen undergraduate students infected with Hepatitis C or dependent of someone infected.
