Achieving Peak Performance in Competitive Athletes, Service Members, First Responders, Industrial Workers, and Others

LSU is known for our world-class athletes, who train and perform daily at the forefront of human physical and mental capabilities. We are also known for our teamwork. An athlete’s ability to reach their full potential depends on the work of the team, from their competitive teammates and coaches, to their athletic trainers and doctors, to the LSU researchers investigating the key questions and developing the innovations that ensure athletes’ performance, safety, well-being, and long-term health.

Likewise, Louisiana is known for its dedicated tactical and operational athletes, those who serve as military personnel, first responders (e.g. firefighters), astronauts, and in other key roles, as well as farmers, industrial and outdoor workers, technicians, and other professionals who produce the goods and services that keep our nation and world running.

The institute studies not only the health of athletes who are actively competing and working, but also their health trajectories across their lifespan. Research insights on the long-term mental, emotional, and social challenges that current and former competitive athletes face have implications for the health and well-being of tactical and operational athletes, and vice versa.

The Institute for the Health and Performance of Champions was established by LSU and its partners to ensure the health and performance of all champion athletes across Louisiana and worldwide who face demanding conditions every day.
