Louisiana’s coastal wetlands and marshes are in trouble, and the potential solution may lie in a species that is both new and controversial to the region: the black mangrove.

As temperatures rise, these cold-tolerant trees are moving northward, making their way into Louisiana’s coastal marshes, potentially altering the delicate balance of the state’s ecosystem.

Researchers from LSU's Department of Oceanography & Coastal Sciences are diving deep into understanding the role of mangroves and how they could shape the future of coastal restoration.
