LSU Vet Med's Dog Daycare offers an exceptional experience for pups
April 22, 2026
The LSU Vet Med Dog Daycare takes pride in building days for its attendees that are safe, fun, and enriching. With a dedicated team of knowledgeable, compassionate staff, the program focuses on individualized care because no two dogs are the same. Each day is intentionally designed to support a dog’s comfort, socialization, and overall well-being.
We spoke with managers Liz Guidry and Victoria Marks to get a behind-the-scenes look at the dog daycare.
What does the program offer?
We offer a full day of structured play and enrichment Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
What does a typical day look like?
Check-in begins at 7 a.m., with dogs settling into their kennels (blankets provided). Playtime starts at 8 a.m., with group sessions lasting about 20 minutes, just enough for pups to burn energy before needing a break.
Between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., dogs participate in enrichment activities like stuffed Kongs, lick mats, and puzzles. Optional add-ons include themed crafts and special activities.
After rest time, dogs enjoy a second play session before winding down in their kennels until they are picked up by their people. Potty breaks are provided regularly based on each dog’s needs, and all dogs are monitored throughout the day.
How are dogs matched for playgroups?
When we create playgroups, we focus on each pup’s comfort and happiness as they find their friends. Because dogs can’t tell us how they feel, we pay close attention to body language and behavior, both theirs and the dogs they’re being introduced to.
We typically start evaluations with a lower-energy dog, then gradually introduce others who may be more rambunctious one at a time. It’s completely normal for a dog not to mesh with all of the dogs in their size group (small, medium, and large). In those cases, we create a customized group just for them.
As we get to know each dog, we learn their quirks and preferences. Even the order in which they do best entering a playgroup can matter because something as simple as who walks in first can set the tone. It takes time and patience to learn each pup, and we take pride in knowing each one who is in our care.
Above all, we never want to force a dog into a situation that makes them feel uncomfortable or stressed. We want to build each dog’s sociability and reinforce positive experiences. Over time, this helps them gain confidence and truly enjoy each other in the daycare experience. We have had plenty of shy dogs come in, and seeing them open up, make friends, and trust us is the best part of this job.
When dogs aren’t playing, what are they doing?
When dogs aren’t in active play sessions, they rotate between enrichment time, rest periods, or optional activities such as paw-print crafts, holiday events like Easter egg hunts, or even a birthday celebration.
