Roadmap to Fall 2020
Friday, July 10, 2020; 5:15 p.m.
Dear LSU Community,
All of us at LSU are extremely excited to welcome you back to campus for the fall semester. We can’t wait to see you again, and we’re hard at work to prepare for your return and the safe reopening of our campus.
To give you more details about our plans for the fall semester, we have put together a Roadmap to Fall 2020. This comprehensive document includes information on our guiding principles as we return to campus as well as our plans to keep everyone safe and healthy, including specific guides for students and employees.
Because the health and safety of our LSU Family must remain our highest priority when we return this fall, campus life is going to be a little different than what we’re used to. However, the unrivaled spirit that makes LSU such a special place has only been strengthened by the challenges we’ve overcome together in recent months—and it will be even stronger when we come together on our beautiful campus again.
All the decisions we’ve made about the fall semester are the result of countless hours of careful planning and discussion with LSU’s leadership team, the LSU Emergency Operations Center, and a host of other faculty and staff members in a variety of roles who have provided feedback and ideas. We believe these plans will help us keep everyone on our campus safe when we return and resume traditional operations to the greatest extent possible.
Capacity in our classrooms, common areas, and residence and dining halls will be limited in accordance with CDC and state guidelines. That means some classes will be held in-person, some will be remote, and some will be a hybrid of both. We’ll also be wearing face masks, practicing physical distancing, and greatly enhancing our cleaning processes. In addition, we’ll be testing some members of our LSU Family on a voluntary basis to better understand the virus’ presence in our community, as well as establishing a contact tracing program to more fully protect those who may have come in contact with someone carrying COVID-19.
I encourage you to visit lsu.edu/roadmap to review the Roadmap to Fall 2020 and access additional information about the fall semester, including recently announced changes to the academic calendar. Please keep in mind that portions of our plan may change as the coronavirus situation continues to evolve. We’ll be sure to keep you informed throughout the summer, and we appreciate your understanding and patience as we prepare for the fall semester. We’ll also continue to bring faculty and staff back to campus in phases, and employees will receive additional information about when they can return as additional phases are implemented.
As we work toward the safe reopening of campus, LSU has also intensified our ongoing work to foster an inclusive culture that is welcoming to all students. We’ve made great progress in recent years to increase inclusion and diversity at LSU, but we know there’s more work to be done—and we know our actions will speak louder than our words. Please visit lsu.edu/together to learn about the concrete steps we’re taking to make real and lasting improvements that will strengthen our campus culture.
We all have a role to play in ensuring everyone in our LSU Family remains safe and feels welcomed on our campus this fall. I have been inspired and heartened by the way our students, faculty, and staff have responded to the unprecedented challenges we’ve faced in recent months, and I’m confident that we’ll continue to work together to do what’s right and make this fall semester a great success.
