LSU Receives Insight Into Diversity 2020 Higher Education Excellence In Diversity Award for the Eighth Time

09/08/2020
BATON ROUGE – LSU has received the 2020 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity, or HEED, Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. As a recipient of the annual HEED Award — a national honor recognizing U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion — LSU will be featured, along with 89 other recipients, in the November 2020 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. This is the eighth year LSU has been named as a HEED Award recipient.

“It is truly remarkable to have once again received the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity award from Insight to Diversity,” said LSU Vice Provost for Diversity Dereck J. Rovaris Sr. “Few universities have won multiple HEED awards, and of those universities, only a handful have been honored eight times. LSU is one of them. This recognition is based on an intensive review of the entire enterprise’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. Once again LSU has demonstrated that our commitment extends way beyond words and statements. Truly at LSU, diversity is good for everyone!”

INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine selected LSU because of programs and initiatives that support our students, faculty, and staff like the Black Women’s Empowerment Initiative, or BWEI; the LGBTQ+ Brunch; and Black HIV/AIDS awareness day.

“The HEED Award process consists of a comprehensive and rigorous application that includes questions relating to the recruitment and retention of students and employees — and best practices for both — continued leadership support for diversity, and other aspects of campus diversity and inclusion,” said Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. “We take a detailed approach to reviewing each application in deciding who will be named a HEED Award recipient. Our standards are high, and we look for institutions where diversity and inclusion are woven into the work being done every day across their campus.”
