German-American Fulbright Program at LSU

Welcome to the 2021 German-American Fulbright Program at LSU: Leaders in Entrepreneurship. The College of Engineering is pleased to welcome German Fulbright students to its first virtual exchange program! We are partnering with the E. J. Ourso College of Business to introduce participants to LSU’s engineering courses of study and how they are connected to entrepreneurship.

This program will be held 100% online, featuring real-time interactions with LSU faculty, staff, and students, and local industry representatives and entrepreneurs. Activities will include lectures, presentations, panel discussions, and virtual site visits with relevant partners.

Each participant will be paired with an LSU student to serve as a “buddy” throughout the virtual program. Buddies will be recruited from the Society of Peer Mentors student organization (SPM). Several virtual social events with buddies will be facilitated in addition to one-on-one online meetings.

Program Details

  • August 29, 2021-September 18, 2021
  • Participants will receive approximately 15 hours a week of program content
  • Monday through Friday, 4:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. Central European Summer Time (9:00am-12:00pm US CST)
  • Some additional asynchronous content will be provided, as well as extracurricular activities with buddies at times mutually agreed upon outside of the regular program schedule
  • Program Orientation will be held on August 25 from 4:00pm-6:00pm Central European Summer Time

  • All sessions will be held via Zoom.
  • Asynchronous content will be posted on LSU’s Moodle.
  • An orientation will be held about a week before the program begins to prepare participants with foundational knowledge, assist them with setting up their virtual LSU accounts, and familiarize them with the Moodle page prior to the three-week virtual program.

Upon successful completion of the full program, students will be awarded a certificate of completion by LSU.

Adrienne Steele headshotAdrienne Steele is the assistant director of student programs and outreach for the College of Engineering at LSU. Her favorite part of this position is serving as staff advisor of the Society of Peer Mentors, a student organization with about 200 members who lead K-12 outreach activities in the community and mentor incoming freshmen through a wide variety of programs including “Geaux Engineering.” Steele also assists faculty members with broader impacts and outreach activities for grant proposals, facilitates the German-American Fulbright Program, and coordinates summer camps in the college. She has more than 20 years of experience in STEM education and has an Education Specialist Certification in science education, in addition to bachelor’s and master’s degrees in biological sciences. When she isn’t working, she enjoys primitive camping and reading.

 

 

 

 

Liz Melvin headshotElizabeth M. Melvin earned her BS in chemical engineering from The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, in 2002 and her MS and PhD in chemical engineering from North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina, in 2008 and 2011, respectively. While at NC State, the focus of her research was to design microfluidic devices for the detection and manipulation of various cell types. One application in particular was to design an electrically-driven, cell-focusing microfluidic device to be used in conjunction with an optical waveguide for environmental-based applications. Prior to joining LSU, Melvin held a number of positions in industry with companies such as Dow Corning (now Dow), Johns Manville, and Hospira. Her passion lies in teaching, mentoring undergraduate students, and promoting excellence in education for engineers.  At LSU, she previously held positions in the Cain Department of Chemical Engineering as an adjunct assistant professor and professional in residence and was also the undergraduate program advisor for chemical engineering. Melvin is co-author on a textbook, Elements of Environmental Engineering, and is actively involved with ASEE (American Society of Engineering Education). In her free time, she spends time with her husband, three children, and dog, as well as volunteers for Girl Scouts and Boys Scouts and coaches K-1 soccer. She also enjoys watching TV, singing, and sewing.
