LSU Commencement with confettiAnother Record-Breaking Class Graduates at LSU’s 295th Commencement

LSU alumnus Rep. Steve Scalise, U.S. House Majority Whip and the third ranking House Republican leader, delivered the keynote address, and LSU graduated one of its largest and most diverse classes at the university’s 295th commencement exercises on Friday, May 11.

At the spring commencement ceremony, a total of 3,967 degrees were awarded – the third largest amount of degrees ever awarded in the spring. The overall class of 2017-18 saw 6,497 degrees awarded, the second most ever awarded in an academic year.

This spring saw the most degrees ever awarded to African-American students, Hispanic students, Asian students and veterans. Records were also set for these student groups for the overall 2017-18 academic year as well.

LSU’s May 2018 graduating class represents 57 Louisiana parishes, 45 U.S. states and 58 foreign countries. Women made up 54.37 percent of the class, and men made up 45.63 percent. The oldest graduate is 67, and the youngest is 19.

LSU Named One of America’s Best Value Colleges by Forbes

LSU is rated as a top 50 best value among public universities and 88th overall in Forbes 2018 America’s Best Value Colleges rankings.

LSU is the highest rated university in Louisiana on the list and the 44th best value among public universities in the nation, according to Forbes. Among SEC peers, LSU is the fifth best value ahead of Auburn University, University of Alabama, University of Kentucky, University of Mississippi and University of Missouri, among others.

 

Acting Provost Haynie

Interim Executive Vice President and Provost Named

Stacia Haynie, former dean of the LSU College of Humanities and Social Sciences, has been selected to serve as Interim Executive Vice President and Provost since May 1.

Haynie first came to LSU in 1990 as an assistant professor in the Department of Political Science. In addition to an accomplished academic career, she also brings considerable administrative experience to the position, having serving as the dean of LSU's largest college, department chair, a dean, and a vice provost.

Haynie is leading the campus as previous Executive Vice President and Provost Rick Koubek transitions to his role as president of another university. The entire LSU community wishes Koubek well and looks forward to Provost Haynie's time in the role.

 

Dean Peterson

LSU Dean Named one of the Most Influential Businesswomen in Baton Rouge

Cynthia Peterson, dean of the LSU College of Science and Seola Arnaud and Richard Vernon Edwards Jr. Professor, has been named among the capital city’s top Influential Women in Business by the Greater Baton Rouge Business Report.

An alumna of both LSU and LSU Health Sciences Center-Shreveport, she returned to campus in August of 2014 as the first woman to lead LSU’s College of Science, which consists of more than 250 faculty and nearly 2,000 students. In her time at LSU, Peterson has launched initiatives to grow the number of women and underrepresented minority faculty and students, improve undergraduate and graduate student recruitment in math and science programs, and advance K-12 science and math education and teacher preparation programs.

Joni Shreve

LSU Faculty Member Named SAS Distinguished Professor

Joni Shreve, a faculty member in the LSU E. J. Ourso College of Business, received the 2018 SAS Distinguished Professor Award at the annual SAS Global Forum.  
The award is given to a professor who uses SAS software to teach statistical analysis and who fosters in students an appreciation for the software as an effective analytics tool in both industry and research.

LSU Architecture Professor Ursula Emery McClure Named on List of 13 Innovative Female Architects Around the World

Ursula Emery McClure, FAAR, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, A. Hays Town Professor in the LSU School of Architecture, was named on ArchDaily’s list of 13 top female architects, the only architect in the United States to make the list. The article “Celebrating A Generation of Women Leaders in Architectural Practices Around the World,” published April 3, 2018, recognizes innovative female architects across the globe. She is listed among architects from Brazil, India, Denmark, Mexico, France, Portugal, Uruguay, Argentina, and Spain.

LSU Sophomore Corey Matyas was recently named a 2018 Goldwater Scholar.

For the first time ever, two LSU students were named 2018 Udall Scholars. Jack Green of Lake Charles, La., and Madelyn Smith of Lafayette, La., received the recognition from the Udall Foundation, with Ms. Smith receiving the award for two consecutive years. McKaila Darden of Charenton, La., receiving an honorable mention.

The team from LSU's E.J. Ourso College of Business just won the 2018 SEC MBA Case Competition.

Rory Bentley and Harvey Shows, both LSU physics majors, were named Astronaut Scholars by the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation

LSU senior Logan Istre recently received the prestigious James Madison Foundation Fellowship.

Six current students or recent LSU graduates are recipients of the 2018 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program, or GRFP, and three others received honorable mention.

Come learn everything you need to know about the United State's largest blue crab industry in this fun and informative talk by LSU Associate Professor and Louisiana Sea Grant Fisheries Specialist Julie Lively.
